Minnie & Maisie

Minnie & Maisie

It soon be became apparent who was the boss, poor Minnie didn’t know what to do. She was so friendly, in fact overly friendly, in fact she would throw herself onto her back with a ‘you can tickle my tummy’ pose friendly! Maisie took advantage…big style!

If Maisie had been a person she would be clad in leather, tattooed all over and have studs protruding from every orifice. And she would have been the school bully!

If Minnie had been a person, she would have gone to ballet lessons, played the piano and be invited for afternoon tea at the palace! And she would have been teachers pet!

That’s how opposite they were.

Maisie was greedy, she played dirty and was a thug. She carried her hooked tail like a weapon.

The first night that she arrived I reinstated the cage, I placed it on a small table next to my side of the bed so I was eye level. She never complained when I put her in, she just curled up in a ball and went to sleep. Minnie lay on her pillow on our bed and watched smugly, relieved at last to be separated from this vile creature. (Her words not mine) (if she could speak)

I lay watching her and wondered to myself if I had done the right thing in having another dog. I didn’t dare voice my concerns after all the discussions I’d had arguing the point about how having another puppy would be a good thing.
She woke me 4 hours later needing to go to the toilet. That was good of her to let me know, that was something she had in common with Minnie, she didn’t want to soil her bedding.
I had puppy pads in our bathroom that I would lift Minnie on during the night when she woke me. She would have a wee and go straight back to sleep. Silly me, I thought Maisie would do the same…..wrong! She refused to go on the puppy pads, she would jump straight off as if her feet were on fire. I had to carry her outside in the garden in the middle of the night so she could go. Of course that meant Minnie had to come too. But unlike Minnie, Maisie wanted to run around the garden playing at three o’clock in the morning and I couldn’t catch her.
She had such a good time that she woke up at 4, 5 & 6 o’clock to do a re-enactment. To say I was exhausted was an understatement, I was good for nothing. That was just the first night!

When Maisie had completed her course of injections and was allowed out for the first time I couldn’t wait to put her newly made Minnie matching harness on and take her out with Minnie for a walk on the promenade.

Her first encounter with another dog apart from Minnie was a Labrador type. He was friendly wagging his tail at them, Minnie did her usual, threw herself on her back while Maisie was like a rabid dog barking and straining on the lead standing upright on her two back legs and wanting to rip his throat out!

I was hoping that as Minnie was 5 weeks older than her, Maisie might learn from her. All these lovely qualities that Minnie had (apart from the neediness) would hopefully in time rub off on Maisie. But it appeared that the opposite was happening. Maisie taught Minnie how to dig holes in the lawn, how to empty my planters, how to eat all colour from my garden, how to catch flies earwigs spiders and anything else that dared to enter our garden.
