Squeaky bone

Squeaky bone

This can be made in most fabrics and you can make it as elaborate or as plain as you like depending on what your pooch is like. Obviously if he/she is destructive you will need to reinforce the liner to protect the squeak! If its a little pooch like my own two that just like to squeeze the bone until it squeaks, then make it as soft as you like. In my example I am using pink fleece with a cotton liner and I finished it with a little scrap of Cath Kidston dotty fabric.

Firstly, draw yourself a bone shape which is really easy and you don’t need a template for it but you can see roughly what size mine was on the photos.  The largest measurements of mine is 19cm x 12cm (7½” x 4¾”) and the smallest measurements 16.5 x 7cm (6½” x 2¾”)

You don’t have to be exact after all no bone is an exact shape!

Then cut out two bone shapes for your main fabric, if this is stretchy like fleece then make it exactly the same size as the inner bone because it will stretch nicely over and give a nice finish without any bagginess. If your fabric does not give, then make it 1cm or ½” bigger all round.

As you can see on the photos I used a scrap piece of cotton for the inner bone and I always find it easier to draw the shape on then sew it round before cutting it out leaving a little gap big enough to turn right side round. It doesn’t really matter for the inside bone because no ones going to see that bit.

Turn right side out and insert a bit of stuffing to fill the nobly bits first and then wrap a bit around the squeaky before you insert this too. It doesn’t really matter where you place the squeaker, then add as much stuffing as you like but I prefer not to over stuff it.

Sew up the open end and put aside. Put right sides together of your main fabric and start sewing from the beginning of a nobly bit and go all the way around the bone ending on the last nobly bit leaving the straight bit of the bone open.

Insert the inner bone and either hand sew shut, or if you have used stretchy fabric then there will be enough ‘give’ in it to run it on the machine as I did. I finished mine with a little sleeve of pretty fabric and hand sewn it into place.
